What the @%$# am I doing here at the TUD???

I am currently studying Computer Science at the university of Delft, Holland. Quite a task, I must say. It's starting to get more fun while I near the end, but I think I've learned something on the way:

If you can do it tomorrow, do it next week.

I'm in the counsel of the faculty of Technical Mathematics and Informatics here at Delft university and try to get the best for the students out of it. Still, I get paid and the students don't. But I don't mind.
I'm also in the CRI2 and CRI3, two small groups that keep the contact between professors -teachers- and students on a regular base. At least, we try. It depends on the teachers attitude wether it works or not.
I also manage a complaints-account for the TWI faculty. It's right here!

Meanwhile I try to attend some medical colleges too. Besides informatics I'm also quite interested in medicin (neurology) and have some interest in psychology.

I think it's quite interesting to see how man 'works' and how psychology is getting more and more needed while we've got more and more kinds of communication lurking in the near future or even just around the corner. But still, that's just a hobby.

Medicin on the other hand is something I'm deeply interested in. Ever since I was a little boy I wanted to be a doctor. But my first commodore 64 -oh, those good old days- threw me off balance and I fell for it: computer science (never thought I would end up this way). I still think that programming is quite fun, but what could be more exciting than programming the worlds (or maybe even: the universes) most complex kind of computer: the human brain... Martial arts try to do this too, by the way. They've had quite some succes at it!

Neural networks and in some way parallel computers fascinate me in a peculier way: I think they're quite promising kinds of tools, but I don't think they'll ever be usefull in a very broad domain. In a way, every network is considered to do some special kind of job. So what we have here is something like a autistic child who can do a neat little trick, but is useless in every other way of life. It can't even feed itself. I think that networks learn in quite a different way than we all think it does up to now. But maybe I'm wrong. Time will tell.

Hobbies

Just for those who are interested... Otherwise skip it.

Computers
Of course I must be interested in computers. I'm a great AMIGA fan. A shame it didn't work out for Commodore. I've got two Amigas 500, ks2.04, wb2.1, 5 Meg (4 fast, 1 chip) and a 52 Meg harddisk (too small, I know). Fat Agnus installed, three diskdrives (one of them is a 5 1/4!!!) and a lot of disks, but still I need more...
I started out with a Commodore 64. I programmed some nice little programs on that nice machine. In machine code, of course. Some 3D programs that worked out quite well, and some other vector oriented programs.. All in all, it was quite a nice machine, to my opinion.
Reading
I'm a great fan of horror and SF. Stephen King is a great writer. No book is too small, no tale too horrifying. He's great. Terry Pratchet is also quite a writer. And Asimov, Silverberg, Aldiss, Clarke, van Vogt, Harrison... The list goes on and on...
Writing
Not in the sence of writing letters, or something. I'm terrible at that. But I write small stories and usually don't finish them. It's not that I get stuck or something, but I just don't have enough time to sit down and finish them off... *OVERKILL!!*
I wrote some small Pooh-like story the other day for my girlfriend. Take a look if you like...
Visual Art
Not the kind which you could hang upside-down and still wouldn't see what the creator meant by it... I like the REAL artists... Especially I like a guy called H.R. Giger. He draws some fantasy like macaber pictures that are so real... He once was stopped and checked at the Dutch border. When they found his paintings they asked where 'those pictures were taken'... Giger laughed at them -never laugh at someone who can change your fait- and Giger had to stay there until some experts told them all that those really were paintings... Nice work!
It's wonderfull!!! Just look at the pictures of this unforgettable artist!

BTW: He also designed the aliens in the 'Alien' movies... See them!
Humor
Some favorites:
AD & D
I`m playing Advanced Dungeons and Dragons here in Delft with a party which consist of about seven characters, five players. My character is a 85 years old gnome called 'Groock'. He's a fifth/fourth (or was it the other way around?!?) level thief/wizard. We're in Greyhawk and trying to find the answer to some kind of a disease called 'The Red Death'.
Music
I like music. Once I've won almost every album of Queen and since then I collected their other albums too. But that's not the only kind of music I like. I also like -when I'm in the mood- the Beatles, Nirvana ("I kill you, I'm NOT(????) gonna crack..."), Slayer, Kate Bush, Prince, Red Hot Chilly Peppers, Metallica, Marillion, Pink Floyd, etc. etc. etc. Almost anything. But *stress:* NO Hip-Hop, House, Rap, or other crap. Well ok, the Geto Boys are funny, I think... And maybe Ice-T is nice too...
Sport
A few years ago I had the pleasure to study the ways of Shoalin Kempo. Don't confuse this with Kendo. Kempo is a karate-like fighting art, but better. Judo teaches you how to defend yourself, karate shows you how to neutralise a person, and Kempo teaches you how to eliminate someone. Therefore we were not allowed to use our knowledge outside the dojo. If you did, you would be in a lot of trouble... Fifteen full-trained kempoka are not something to simply walk by...

Shoalin Kempo was practised by monks of the Shoalin Temple and spread out to China. My teacher was raised there and studied the ways of the Shoalin Temple. Here in Holand he built a school and taught his knowledge to us. But alas, I wasn't able to attend his classes anymore. I moved to Delft. And to travel twohundred miles just to work out for two hours didn't appeal to me...

Another sport I have quite an interest in is Nunchaku-DO. I'm still trying to get my hands on a wooden pair of nunchakus. They're sort of illegal here in Holland. :(
